Treasure Coast Food Bank provides food assistance weekly to nearly 100,000 people who are food-insecure and promotes self-sufficiency and healthy lifestyles as a strategy to end hunger. Because we do not have a temperature controlled area in our facility suitable for the sorting of fruits and vegetables, we distribute to our partners in bulk. By enclosing 1000 square feet of our warehouse, and putting it under temperature control, we would have an area to effectively sort the 5 million+ pounds of produce we receive annually. This would feed more people by allowing access to these items for partner agencies that have limited cold storage space. The sorting room will also serve as a volunteer training room. At present, groups of volunteers receive training sitting on the floor in our lobby due to a lack of cool space. Funding of this project would provide a more suitable environment for them, as well as expand our capacity to work towards a healthier, hunger-free Treasure Coast.
