Troubled community members, chiefs and councilors as well as - TopicsExpress

Troubled community members, chiefs and councilors as well as experts in the areas of mining and environment came together yesterday to discuss the Mount Polley Mine disaster: what went wrong and what can we do next? The attendance was tremendous and we are grateful to those who came for sharing their concerns. It is clear that the Secwepemc are deeply worried about both the environmental impacts of the tailings pond breach as well as how we might go about avoiding disasters like this in the future. Our people have called for regulation reviews, the development of emergency response and prevention services and plan to hold government and industry accountable for their actions. We would like to thank everyone for their input; as well we would like thank the Adams Lake Band for partnering with us to make this event possible, as well as Andrea Kennedy of Bridgeway Consulting Inc., and Dion Arnouse of 2Badgers Consulting Inc., for sharing valuable information with us. Together, as a unified nation, we will institute change and advocate for the preservation of our lands and title.
