Tuesday 22nd WHAT DO YOU LIVE FOR? Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. John 12:42-43 (NKJV) About a decade or so ago, a septuagenarian in the legal profession, and highly rated politician died. The news of his demise was the newspapers’ headlines. The summary of what was remembered of him however was not his brilliance in the courtroom; it was his dress sense. He is said to have always “dressed for the occasion.” Few years later, another politician in the same profession with the former, (though much younger) also died. His death was health related. Though he had suffered severally in the hands of the countrys rulers, and was jailed severally too on trumped-up charges by the powers that be; he was celebrated in death more than the older politician. Also those who hated his guts when he was alive said glowing things about him in death. What are you living for at the moment? Is it for self or for a good cause? In my final year in the university as an under-graduate, when I could have spent an extra-year to re-write some courses; a meeting was held in the department to determine my fate. After the meeting was deadlocked, the H.O.D called me into her office in the presence of a few lecturers that stayed back, and said Mr. … you will have to spend one more year with us to complete your programme. I could not even defend myself because I knew she was right. But out of the blues came the voice of one of the lecturers, he said: Why should we keep him here for another year? Let’s allow him to go.” That was how I graduated that year. It’s been two decades now. But it remains fresh in my heart. What are you living for? For the praise of men, or the praise of God? Today’s Memory Verse So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw …the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God! Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. Matthew 27: 54, 57, 58 PRAYER POINT: Teach me O Lord to do good. Give me the grace to live for what is good and just.
