Tuesday I-X Nutrition Topic #4 Fats What are they: Fats are made up of fatty acids and glycerol. What do they do: Fats are a critical part of our daily intake. Our fat intake and the types of fats we eat play a role in not only our heart disease risk, but also our cancer risk. Fats help our brain and immune system. Where do we get them: The Key to our health is to not exceed 30% of our daily intake in fats. The type of fat we need to include in that 30% is omega-3 from fish sources. This can be wild caught salmon, sardines or cod liver oil. Some individuals cannot tolerate the taste of cod liver oil or fish and therefore in omega-6. Diets exceptionally high in omega-6 may be associated with increased cancer risk and heart disease. According to research the optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 1:3.
