Tuesday – January 20, 2015 Reading: Deuteronomy 20 Prayer Focus: Hunger. Today we pray for individuals and families that suffer from hunger. Many people think of hunger as a problem in developing countries, but one in six Americans suffers from food insecurity. Among African Americans 1 in 4 or twenty-five per cent of children suffers from food insecurity. Nearly 33 percent of all African American families suffer from some sort of food insecurity. Thus today we pray for these families to receive the means by which they can overcome the challenge of hunger. Devotional Reading: Edward J. Brady, S.J.: Theological Underdevelopment and Ethical Sensitivity (Taken from The Causes of World Hunger by William Byron) “When I touch the body of the poor, I touch the body of Christ.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta said. She also believes it! It is a theological statement inviting assent from believers throughout the world. When that worldwide assent of faith comes, the problem of hunger will be no more! Regrettably, however, most of the world’s Christians see hunger as a secular problem only. They fail to see, with the eye of faith, Christ present and suffering in the hungry poor. Those Christians are underdeveloped theologically; they are also ethically insensitive. For most Christians, hunger is a ‘charity issue,’ not a question of justice. Their theological understanding needs broadening and deepening. The Old Testament presents care for the poor and the oppressed in terms of justice. In Isaiah 58:1–10, the prophet is to ‘declare to my people their transgressions,’ for ‘they ask me for righteous judgments....Is not this the fast I choose. . . to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry? Today I will spend some time trying to learn more about the problem of global poverty and world hunger.
