Turning Backs to Our Civilization “A generation which ignores history, has no past and no future” By this quote we can just imagine our condition, as today indeed we are doing so. We are ignoring our past to shape our future! Will the demolition of the temples of Ancient India or the mosques of medieval and of the palaces of pride and the forts of valour take us to heights of success? It’s a matter of grave concern that we keep ignoring invaluable memoirs of our glorious past which range from manuscripts to letter, from inscriptions to coins. Will we be able to reach the zenith and outstand in front of the world with no base, being like a building with no foundation? Pulling out old foundation and forgetting our history which is witness of time, witness of achievements and developments is rather causing tremor which leads to quake in our present and affects our future, leading to fall and decline of the society. For instance, one of the pivotal reason of the colonization of India was that- Indians, quite unfortunately dismissed from their minds that they had such rich heritage, glorious past and had made great achievements in various fields rather took themselves as primitive incapable of governing themselves. Still today people are ignoring the past and its memoirs, which were once symbols of India’s success, triumph and prestige, today stand as symbols of negligence and decay. Whether it is the demolition of the century old mosque in Rajasthan, about a year ago, or the fort near Hyderabad- the same story echoes from all of them. Even the Pallipadai temples and the mausoleum of Martha Kings and Queens in Thanjavur, fort and tombs of Rulers of Bhopal in Islamnagar, palaces of Begums of Bhopal and tombs of Sultans of Delhi Sultanate mirror the recklessness and are on the road to decay. Neither are the manuscripts, scroll and letters nor the statues inscriptions and other antiquities safe. It’s very much clear from seeing the way they are kept in some of the museums. Are they really preserved there or merely exhibited? Can they be preserved in a place with window panes broken, from which uncontrolled amount of sunlight enters and with every wind, dust covers the antiques, and with every rain, moisture envelopes the collections and provide room for fungus and corrosion? Can those collections be called being taken care of which are often encroached by insects like termites due lack of proper preservation under custody of authorities? These questions still dangle in front of all of us, expecting answers from the authorities. Those who claim to be taking care of our past are themselves negligent. Is this not making fun of our own past? Or is it we who are responsible for being quite? We need to take care of our yesterday in order to shape our present and future, as every glimpse of historical memoirs reminds us of one or the other society that ever existed, helping us to learn from their experiences, and guide ourselves. - Hisham Jameel Siddiqui.
