Turning the sky red, white and blue: The Red Arrows Bournemouth - TopicsExpress

Turning the sky red, white and blue: The Red Arrows Bournemouth Air Festival fever will soon be upon us again, but how much do you know about the festivals best loved display team? • As the public face of the Royal Air Force the Red Arrows always fly the same type of aircraft that are in service as the RAFs advanced fast jet trainer; this is currently the BAE Systems Hawk T1 • The jets have a top speed of just over 600 miles per hour • As well as providing an impressive sight, the coloured ‘smoke’ used in the Red Arrows displays helps the pilots assess wind speed and direction. • The pilots wear anti ‘g’ suits to help them withstand g-force of up to a maximum of 8g during the displays (astronauts in a shuttle launch experience a force of about 3g so you can only try to imagine how intense 8g is!) • The Red Arrows has 9 planes and 9 pilots – there are no reserve pilots for safety reasons as training is so rigorous a stand-in could not possibly learn all the maneuvers. If a pilot is unable to fly an 8 plane display can be used, but if the Team Leader is unable to fly the display cannot go ahead. The Red Arrows will be performing on all four days of the Bournemouth Air Festival. For details on display times check the official Facebook page. https://facebook/bournemouthairfestival We’re hoping to catch a private fly-past from the Sun Deck and terrace again this year as the team return to the airport! Did any of you capture any amazing photos of the Red Arrows from last years festival that you would like to share with us???
