Twenty years ago today, on September 21 I lost my mother suddenly, she was only 54. Of all the days in my life that some major event has happened there is no day clearer in my memory than this day. When I am in Whitehorse I especially feel the day, the weather, the smells and the colours. Todays weather was almost a mirror image of that day 20 years ago. It will rain most of the night. I have had my share of loss in life and one of the things that has helped me is to focus on the gifts that were given to me from the one I lost. In my mothers case the gifts were numerous. I will name my top three here. Anyone who reads this post and has also lost someone they deeply loved feel free to comment, name them and share a gift they gave you. My Mother Connie gave me theses gifts; 1) the gift of cooking, we spent many hours working in the kitchen together, she started teaching me when I was twelve. 2) compassion for those who are less fortunate. No one can do their best when they are hungry and no one cares. 3) bravery, face your day honestly and stand up for yourself.
