Two interesting/sad food for thought facts: 1. The NFL, the PGA, and the NHL are all classified as tax exempt organizations. If they were to be taxed, it would generate an extra $100 million dollars in annual tax revenue for the federal government. MLB gave up its tax exempt status in 2007. 2. Religious groups are predicted to have more than $600 billion in assets. If they were taxed, it would lead to almost $1 billion dollars in extra revenue. This is predicted to be a low ball number, since it doesnt account for other subsidies to religious groups (sales tax exemption, etc.) and only counts the actual churches as assets (many religious groups hold other properties).
