UPDATE ELEPHANT CALVES DRAMA - ZIMBABWE WAR has gotten in touch with the ZNSPA asking for help in the case of the elephant calves, lions etc. in Zimbabwe, this is their answer: We are most saddened to confirm that widespread rumors concerning the reported trapping of young elephants and potentially lion cubs and sable from family units within the national parks of Zimbabwe appears to be correct. These are the first images that we have received showing baby elephants being held in Bomas inside the Hwange National Park. We understand that the entire area is in lockdown with restricted movement. These photographs were taken at great risk to the individuals concerned. We have it on reliable authority that the current capture exercise may include lion cubs and sable. Regrettably, despite repeated call for financial assistance, ZNSPCA is unable to despatch a team to the Hwange National Park and is currently liaising with third parties and government officials. We had clearly indicated during the last attempted baby elephant shipment to China (which ZNSPCA SUCCESSFULLY STOPPED ) that unless urgent financial assistance was given to acquire appropriate vehicles, train and recruit additional manpower and should similar future events take place we would be seriously hampered in our efforts to intervene. It is pertinent to mention the The ZNSPCA is the only PVO in Zimbabwe that enjoys an open doors policy with senior government officials and National Parks and Wildlife. ZNSPCA can intervene but only with significant financial assistance. It appears that each year during the onset of the rains, trapping of wild animals for export takes place. Such capture exercises will not stop until the matter is brought before CITES who are in fact the sanctioning body behind such issues.
