Umar ibn Al-Khattab (radiAllahu anhu) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: Whoever of you performs Wudu` carefully and then says: Ash-hadu an laa ilaha illa Allahu Wahdahu laa shareeka Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluhu (which means: I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah Alone - Who has no partners - and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger), the eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter through whichever of these gates he desires (to enter). [Reported by Muslim (no. 234), Abu Daawood (no. 169), at-Tirmidhee (no. 55), an-Nasaaee (no. 148), Ibn Maajah (no. 470)] Abu Saeed al-Khudree (radiAllahu anhu) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: Whoever makes wudu`, then says upon finishing the wudu`: Subhaanak-Allahumma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa ilaaha illa Anta astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaika (which means: You are free from any imperfection - oh Allah - and all praise belongs to You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness, and I repent to You), it is written in a parchment, then sealed and is not opened till the Day of Judgement. [Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah, declared Saheeh by al-Albaanee] The Wisdom behind Supplication after Making Wudu` Shaykh Saalih ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah ala as-Sunnah) said: The reason behind making dhikr and duaa following wudu` (ablution) is to combine both physical and spiritual purity, for wudu` is a means of physical purity, whereas dhikr and duaa (implying tawheed and tawba) are signs of spiritual purity. In this way, one becomes in the most perfect state of purity (combining both physical and spiritual purity) and becomes pure enough to be admitted to stand before Allah in prayer, imploring Him humbly and submissively.
