Understanding Health - Part 1 I have planned a series of posts to help people understand better about themselves and look at themselves as seperate individuals with a different prakruti. Diet must be planned according to region and not according to culture from which you originally belong. For eg. People in punjab can have parathas, lassi, etc as the climate is cold and digestion and overall strength of the person is good there. As we move to rajasthan, there is a lot of dryness and an arid climate, hence a lot of ghee (clarified butter) is used to counter this. On moving further south, the amount of roti decreases and the amount of rice increases. As we reach karnataka, mostly all rice and rice products are used, as rotis are made from wheat and are difficult for them to digest in the climate there. As we go further south to kerala, there they mix an ayurvedic powder in their normal drinking water to help digestion as the digestive fire is very weak there. A rajasthani person accostomed to a lot of ghee if for example comes to an extremely humid climate like mumbai and continues to eat according to his culture and not according to the climate, will invariably fall prey to diseases like cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, rheumatic arthritis, etc. A punjabi cannot have these parathas if he is living in chennai. So on and so forth. Similarly for a person living in India which is a tropical country, salads and raw food is not at all healthy (except maybe if you are living in the himalayas or extremely cold climates), it may be healthy for people living in UK or other places. Please help me spread this understanding to people who blindly follow such western Health tips without understanding that those tips and their experimentation are not universal. Kindly spread this, let people know this and I hope it makes a positive impact in their lives. Dr. Manaan Gandhi
