Unfortunately, a group not connected to a candidate decided to use the terrible crime against our sweet Jessica as the subject of a negative flyer. We wont post the flyer nor will we talk about the candidates involved, because we feel that just fuels the negative campaigning that is unfortunately a part of the political landscape in recent years. What we do want to do is condemn the use of Jessica Ridgeway’s name in the political arena with the intention of playing on the inherent sympathy of our community that was affected by the horrific crime against her. This condemnation includes those who use her name to try and draw attention to a specific issue to attack a candidate or their supporters and ALSO those who on the reverse side, will play off of it to drive a story of outrage that is in itself an attack on a candidate or their supporters. All that is needed is for those who don’t agree with this type of attack ad is for them to condemn the tactic without continuing to use Jessica’s name or provide copies of the offensive flyer. We also find that offensive. If either candidate or their supporters who are involved, and any other candidates running for office are upset by the use of Jessica’s name in this manner, they should join us in calling for accountability in our political process.
