Unless Congress acts immediately, 1.3 million jobless people will - TopicsExpress

Unless Congress acts immediately, 1.3 million jobless people will lose their unemployment benefits December 28. These people and their families are still caught in the worst downturn since the Great Depression. They want jobs but the jobs aren’t there: Almost three Americans are still unemployed for every job opening available – a ratio worse than it was at the bottom of the last downturn. Emergency benefits are their only hope for now. In past recessions, emergency benefits continued until the rate of long-term employment was around 1 percent or less. But the current level of long-term unemployed is 2.6 percent. Moreover, ending jobless benefits for them is bad for all of us because it removes their purchasing power from an economy already suffering from inadequate demand. Please call your members of congress today and urge them to extend jobless benefits at once.
