Update for the @Workaholics: Shortly after receiving the accidental snoop letter, I made an exception to my no private advice rule and recommended that LW1 notify HR or IT right away, for the reasons I outline in the column. The response from LW1 is below--Karla I had been leaning towards doing nothing but decided after your email to raise it directly with our director of HR. Were a small office so anonymity by way of my supervisor wasnt really an option. I said basically what you suggested, that I looked at just enough to realize that I was seeing things I had no business seeing. He thanked me for bringing it to his attention and ran immediately off to IT. He later told me that [they were going to fix the problem] and also check who had looked at the files.... I dont plan to mention it to anyone or raise it unless he does. I suspect he would be in a lot more hot water than me. If it comes up again, I will take your advice and talk to an attorney, but for now, I just hope that this quietly fades away.
