Update from WMNC News; prison time imposed in break-in conviction: (News release from District Attorneys Office.) A Catawba County man will spend more than 3-1/2 years in prison minimum following a conviction on break-in charges. District Attorney Jay Gaither announces the conviction of 51-year-old Billy Craven Kerns of Conover for two counts of Felony Breaking and Entering, two counts of Felony Larceny and Habitual Breaking and Entering offender status today in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court. The defendant was sentenced to no less than 44 months and no more than 65 months in prison. The crimes occurred in July 2013 and November 2013 in Catawba County and involved two commercial breaking and enterings. The defendant was caught as a result of the security cameras located in one of the businesses, concerned citizens follow up and the recovery of items stolen at a local pawn shop by law enforcement.
