((Update from the first day off the con.. I tried to write this post earlier on my phone but it failed. Excuse me for posting unfinished products. Anyway, I got in an argument with 1p/2p Iceland roleplay blogger from tumblr.. You have probably seen her blog, its quite popular from what Ive understood. I dont follow her actively because while her art is amazing, her facts are miles off and pisses me out. She uses the popular fanon name Emil Steilsson for her 1p!Iceland and Eiríkur for her 2p. Now, I strongly dislike that fanon name because its just about as incorrect as anything can ever get. (Honestly speaking, anyone who uses Emil Steilsson for Iceland is automatically labeled lazy and unimaginative person in my head. Lazy, because if they had done a little research, they would have found that the name is incorrect. And unimaginative, because, again, with a little research, they would have found /hundreds/ of prettier and more fitting names for Iceland. Just because Emil Steilsson is the most popular fanon, doesnt mean its correct. You should never absorb any information offered to you without checking it yourself. And never trust the first source! Always check at least three!) Short guide to Icelandic names: Icelandic names are patronyms (and some rare cases matronyms) meaning your last name is formed from your fathers first name, f.ex. Steinsson son of Stone, or Aradóttir daughter of Eagle. Icelandic last names are not like the Western family names that you inherit from (usually) your father. However, Steil is NOT an Icelandic name. It cant be found on the list of approved Icelandic names (Icelandic name laws are super strict), therefore its impossible for it exist as an Icelandic name. As for Emil, its a very VERY new name and NOT originally Icelandic either, in Iceland they mostly use names that originate from the Old Norse Viking names with little modern or foreign influence. While Emil is a Scandinavian name, is more commonly links to Sweden (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_i_L%C3%B6nneberga) and has only become somewhat popular in Iceland during the 20th-21st century. Well, the blogger tried to convince me that Steil exists as a name other Scandinavian countries and it was the chosen name for Papa Scandia.. Now that already sounds impossible for me, you think it would be most likely be found in Icelandic name lists as they have the oldest name database in the Nordic countries. But to prove my point, I researched the Nordic name statistics for her. Danish statistics: Not a sign of anyone named Steil in Denmark Swedish statistics: Again, no-one named Steil Norwegian statictics: Nothing I even looked up an Old Norse name database and I couldnt find anything even distantly like Steil. (Yeah, I know Im obsessed but I find this name stuff important, also because the old Nordic belief is that a name describes its bearer and provides them with admired traits related to that name and its meaning.) Unfortunately the blogger girl didnt listen to me. I saw her interest slipping by the time I looked up the Norwegian statistics, when she knew she lost the argument. Sorry this got lengthy but at least I think we have now safely proven why Emil Steilsson is a bad name for Iceland. Please stop using it... Im begging you.))
