Update on Kurt: August 5--A good day that started with his vent - TopicsExpress

Update on Kurt: August 5--A good day that started with his vent being removed at 1:30 a.m. An odd time of day, but earlier in the night he was asleep when they came to remove it. He asked Tom (thanks to the note on the clipboard again--we needed you there, Shaina, to interpret) to help keep him awake. Tom said they both nodded off a lot, but they made it! When I peeked in on him a little before 6, he was snoozing away, vent free. In addition...no ivs! Less than 24 hours after his surgery began, he was being moved to a regular room. His nurse told him he already had a reputation on the floor as the miracle kid. We couldnt agree more! We played barber shop and Ann and I shaved him--cheap little razor and all...what a sport! He looks good with the extra stuff gone...and the port in his neck stays bandaged a lot better, too. He walked today with a PT buddy from his earlier stay...his picture speaks a thousand words to us. He was put on clear liquids and his buddy in food service from his earlier stay dropped by to take his order--he suggested Kurt order double everything--Kurt obliged :). Chicken broth, Ginger ale, popsicles, and jello were the feast today. Ann scored big when she found and brought him Fresca from the gift shop! Sweetie and Jane Rae came up for a visit--always good to see them. Tomorrow is a big day. With his transplant, the skin is sewn shut after the surgery. His scar is called the Mercedes Emblem...yep, hes sporting a big hood ornament on his belly. Tomorrow, theyll take him back to surgery, reopen and then sew up the muscle and fascia layer. Were told hell be one sore guy after that--hopefully, hell be able to keep that high pain tolerance hes had thus far and wont be feeling too bad. Hell also start his round of immune-suppressants tomorrow--his immune system will be medically wiped out in order to allow the liver more free reign in getting established. This will go on and off, periodically, for the next few days. This process is amazing to us, as is his returning health (right down to his scalp even returning to a wonderful pink color). We count on all of your continued, lovely, sacred prayers to keep this kid going in the right direction. God is truly with us, every step--every minute. No one can see Kurts journey and deny the extraordinary blessings we all have from such a wondrous and loving God. Good night and blessings to all!
