VDOT CREWS PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER Drivers should use extra caution tonight and early tomorrow According to weather forecasts, the Richmond region can expect sleet and icy conditions early Wednesday followed by rain throughout most of the region. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been preparing trucks and equipment this week for the approaching storm and contacting hired equipment operators in the event this storm significantly impacts travel in the region. Crews will report for standby operations beginning at approximately 8 p.m. and will be dispatched as necessary once conditions are favorable for ice accumulation. Because areas north and west may first experience snow, VDOT will spot treat certain routes ahead of the storm. Since this storm is expected to begin as freezing rain further south, anti-icing chemicals may not be applied ahead of time. VDOT will continue to monitor the track of this storm and adjust resources as needed. Drivers may encounter ice on the roads until temperatures rise, particularly on bridges, overpasses, shaded and low-lying areas. Crews will apply sand and salt as necessary to improve traction on the roads and help melt ice. VDOT offers the following tips for driving in potentially icy conditions: -- Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination. -- Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and moving equipment. -- If you begin to skid, do not brake. Take your foot off the gas and steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go. -- Check 511 before leaving for the latest road and traffic conditions.
