VO Senior officials of the Lao government, representatives, experts and stakeholders discuss on human rights INTRO: Senior officials of the Lao government, representatives, experts and stakeholders gathered on Friday the 15th of August for a meeting on ‘UN Human Rights Council Special Procedures to discuss how to provide information and raise awareness and understanding of the work of UN Special Rapporteurs. STORY: The meeting was also organised for the implementation of the recommendations listed in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for the Lao government and to specifically consider inviting Special Rapporteurs on human rights to visit Laos. Head of the Presidents Office and Chairman of the Lao National Steering Committee on Human Rights, Phongsavath Boupha, said based on its foreign policy of peace, independence, friendship and cooperation, the government is constructively engaged with the UN human rights bodies and mechanisms. He said the fundamental rights of the Lao people are set forth in the National Constitution and laws. The National Assembly has adopted more than 100 laws. In addition, there are the Residential Ordinances, Prime Ministers Decrees, Ministerial Regulations which directly promote and protect Human Rights. In 2010, Laos underwent the first cycle of UPR and so far has implemented many UPR recommendations and is currently in the process of implementation of the remaining UPR recommendations, which were accepted by Laos. Among these recommendations are ones for Laos to invite Special Rapporteurs on human rights to visit Laos on a case by case basis.
