VOICE is a video performance art project. VOICE currently is in the story development phase. I use in-character improvisations to develop story. This monologue borrows from my life but is not autobiographical - my depression began at 3 1/2 and it was already my normal before I had enough vocabulary to complain about it to my parents. VOICE has 3 characters who are all facets of the same person. One of the three observes the other two, the dysfunctional character and the character who is in denial. The core conflict of VOICE is that all three characters want the same thing - control of the Self - without having to share with the others. I have been in need of a McGuffin and now that I have done a monologue about depression, I know what that McGuffin is, depression - and I will fall back on autobiography for my McGuffin. Having grown up with depression and having always had it as a landmark and the one true thingnin my life, once I finally had to seek professional help when I was almost middle aged, I was afraid that if my depression ever was gone, I would be too.
