VOLUME XXV, NUMBER 1 July-August, 2014 A Serving the Horseshoe Club Lake Community BOARD NEWS The appeal for volunteers should begin with some facts. Our population in the membership is aging. Sorry to have mentioned that fact ! We live in a Association that requires each of us to do a little work towards a common goal, that being ensuring our home prices remain at a respectable level of value. The lake in a pristine condition is the draw for new buyers to our area, the next door neighbors property may be a good second reason for a new buyer. Another appeal should be the realization one day we may wake up and see there are less young members in the Association to do this labored work, then where will we be? I anticipate that we may echo the response that I hear from folks I visit, Im too old to mess with cleaning a lake or dock area. We will appeal for volunteers which may not be available as we have been in the past weeks, then what? Raise the Association dues even higher so we can pay for laborers? We can be assured, the moss and the alligator grass will be a yearly issue for the lake, boat ramp etc. One or two members cant always be available to respond to the problem. Folks cant just file a complaint, each of us is required to be proactive as members in this Association. I found it necessary this past Monday to use a chain saw, a shovel, a hoe plus hand snips to cut down and remove SEVEN trailer loads of natures over growth, this mess has been a issue for some time, it didnt get in this condition in a years time.. someone has dropped the ball.. Every Fall, we will need to keep it cut back. Maybe we should have a work day/picnic day of it! Free burgers and grilled hotdogs for the work party? We do have a nice trimmed picnic area in HEAR YE, HEAR YE!!! For those who wish to be more involved in the happenings of OUR Horseshoe Club Lake Association, your opportunity will soon be made available. At this time, we have the position of VICE PRESIDENT (currently held by LaJuan McCraw) and the possibility of LAKE-COMMON AREA (currently held by Kevin Storey). The name submission is NOW, and the VOTE will be at the October Association meeting and dinner. If you believe that you, as a member have the desire to be a part of the operations of Horseshoe Club Lake, please submit your name and the desired position starting with the President. Realizing some terms are two years, it is my belief, if the Association can move forward to better serve our membership, then we need qualified individuals to step up. Submit your name to any Board Member and we will add you to the list of volunteers ! The Tuckers, who live on Creek Bend, have been placing the turn your news in for the Hearsay sign in their yard, have resigned. They have plans on returning the sign either to another person who will take it over, or they will return it this October to the Board. Mrs. Tucker has expressed has expressed that whoever takes over the responsibility of displaying this sign can continue with the placement in their yard on Creek Bend as long as it is removed each time the news deadline has been met. We are presently looking for someone to carry on with this job. Contact a Board Member or see the Tuckers. the shade by the way! I say all this only to be reminded the Association Board has NO BITE . We have very little recourse to force folks to comply to the bylaws and articles within those bylaws each of us agreed to upon home purchase. We can only appeal to the morals or to the intelligence of members concerning loss dollars in home values. Understanding we have some who will not be concerned, they continue not caring about their next door neighbors property values or their own values. These are the folks who have misplaced the reasons why they moved to Horseshoe Club Lake in the first place. Thanks so much for all the hard work, we are in it for the long haul . . . we are, right? Darrell Nash, President Dear Anonymous; Today I received a gift from you in the mail. I will be honest, a type written note? no return address? I thought the worst. Please, not a disgruntled Association member or a who has a legitimate issue with the lake or common areas. To be honest, I find myself thinking I can do more for the HCL without using the hard earned dollars of the Association, I was caught completely off guard upon opening up your envelope. I thank you ever so much, and can assure you each penny will go towards a better HCL property improvements. I hope in less then a month, you will see a brighter dock and boat ramp area. Phase one has been completed, Phase two is this week and then we will be shinning in the night! Thanks again ! Descriptions here Descriptions here July-August, 2014 Horseshoe Hearsay Page 3 NOW HEAR THIS...NOT ALL THIEVES ARE STUPID!! 1. Some people left their car in the longterm parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the cars registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the peoples home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration/ insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology. 2. GPS . . . Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - dont put your home address in it... Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. 3. CELL PHONES . . . I never thought of this....... This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says I received your text asking about our Pin number and Ive replied a little while ago. When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text hubby in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Moral of the lesson: a) Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... b) And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. c) Also, when youre being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you dont reach them, be very careful about going places to meet family and friends who text you. 4. Purse in the grocery cart scam . . . A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the childrens seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf...wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it. Due to the Lakes problem with weeds, members who like to fish are unable to do so because the hooks get tangled up in weeds beneath the surface of the water. Volunteers have sprayed weeds several times at the dock and other locations, resulting in dead weeds floating on the top of the water, and washing up on the ramp. VOLUNTEERS WORK ON WEEDS IN LAKE The dead weeds have to be raked up and put into piles, to be disposed of in some manner. It is hoped that when the weeds appear next time, we will be able to control them with immediate spraying to insure that this problem doesnt occur again. Its great to see the younger generation with a desire to do summer work. Give Anthony Foster a call at: 903-625-0737 His business card says: Good work . . . fair price. . . . to each of us who pull our trash cans back to the side of our homes until the next pick up day, for those who have pride in their yards and those who are willing to help when called upon. HATS OFF to all of you, it may be a simple thing like the trash can off the street, but it shows to those passing thru, we even care about the little things in life.
