Via The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research: FPWR Funded Project Although hypotonia is a hallmark feature of PWS, the basic mechanisms behind impaired protein synthesis in muscle cells of PWS patients is not well understood. Dr. Elisabetta Fortunati, at the Baschirotto Institute for Rare Diseases in Italy, is working to develop the necessary tools to begin examining this question. Using advanced cell culture techniques, her group is working to develop a PWS-derived muscle cell line. With this tool, they will be able to examine the differences in metabolism, nutrient use, and production of protein for muscle mass in PWS versus typical muscle cells. The information will lay the groundwork for potential therapeutic and training interventions to increase and improve muscle development in those with PWS. fpwr.org/grant/2013/establishment-vitro-model-muscle-cells-derived-primary-fibroblasts-study-dysregulation-tr To learn more about FPWRs Crop of 2013, please visit their research blog. fpwr.org/research-blog
