View historic photo gallery of our ministry The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith has roots that can be traced back to one man, Bishop Sherrod C. Johnson. From this one man, a multitude of preachers have tried to claim his legacy for their own. The fact is, Bishop Johnson is responsible for the building the foundation of ONE CHURCH, that is The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith—no other. With strong men of God, the word of God continues to reach many people nationally and abroad. BishopJohnsonBishop Sherrod C. Johnson: 1919-1961 Bishop Sherrod C. Johnson began his journey for truth years before he founded the church. For a number of years, he was a member of a Pentecostal church, but he began to feel that the whole truth was not being preached. God began to reveal biblical mysteries and the fullness of the scriptures to Bishop Johnson. He understood more and more that pride had no place in the church and that baptism must be in the name of Jesus Christ. In 1947, he established the Church Corporation and began to tirelessly spread the word of God to the nation. Amazingly, with limited classroom education, he became a talented businessman and biblical scholar. He was schooled by God, in the word of God. No one could deny that he had the whole truth. He would accept a challenge and debate from anyone who wished to challenge what he preached. Bishop Johnson offered a reword of a $500,000 to anyone who could prove him wrong—no one ever succeeded! There are so many testimonies from his era that continue to resonate with saints today, such as constructing the headquarters church during the steal-strike—completing it without a mortgage and in record time; and touching a man who fell two stories from a rooftop and raising him from the dead. Bishop Johnson is recognized as a pioneer in radio ministry, as he was among the first to begin preaching over the radio, including operating an in-house studio. In the 1950s, he was also featured in Ebony Magazine as one of the world’s top preachers. For more than 40 years, Bishop Johnson preached the Whole Truth Gospel of Jesus Christ, nationwide and abroad. BishopSheltonBishop S. McDowell Shelton: 1961-1991 Bishop S. McDowell Shelton succeeded Bishop Johnson in 1961 and preached the gospel to many nations for more than 30 years. Bishop Shelton’s ability to speak many languages gave him the opportunity to meet a variety of international leaders, promote the beliefs of the Church around the world, and increase overall membership by giving other nations the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their native tongue. This skill, along with his uncanny ability to build relationships, afforded him the opportunity to become the Consulate General to the country of Lesotho and gain the status as a world-renowned Christian leader. A PhD-level psychologist, self-taught pianist and talented songwriter, he uplifted the Church in a manner that no one can ever forget. Continuing to build on the legacy of truth established by Bishop Johnson, he led and grew a congregation of thousands. Just as the signs of later apostles followed them, many miracles were witnessed during his leadership: he healed the sick, raised the dead, made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. BishopNehemiahBishop Shelton Nehemiah: 1991-1994 Though his time was short, Bishop Nehemiah took the reigns after Bishop Shelton’s death from 1991-1994, restoring the souls of many. Bishop Nehemiah persevered and brought the Church to a higher level of spirituality and self-examination. Many testified of his caring nature and admired his faith in God. He was a true example of having faith in the power of God. It is fitting that his skilled trade was architecture, as he was the rebuilder of our souls, and he crafted the zeal of salvation in the souls of many. He was Bishop Shelton’s eldest son, by adoption. He labored around the headquarters church and his craftsmanship can be seen on many of the church-owned properties. Unlike Bishop Shelton who left his successor on record, Bishop Nehemiah declared that his successor will be “by the spirit”. He knew that the saints of God would know an Apostle among us. It was indeed so!
