WEEKLY ENGLISH UPDATE: Another tough week in Israel in what is a tough neighbourhood. In Eilat we lead relatively sheltered lives but this week we had two missiles shot down by the Iron Dome missiles( I had a grandstand view from the park) and I found the park bench I would sit on when walking the dog blown away by last weeks missile. (Somebody had already used the crater dug by the missile to bury a cat...) Slow week for birds as well. At the beach a number of White-cheeked Terns, a very dark Little Tern and not much else. This morning went up the mountains to look for Sooty Falcons but found only some very noisy Kestrels breeding where Id hoped to find the Sooties. Plenty of White-crowned Wheatears around and also a heavily moulting Mourning Wheatear. At the ponds things are a bit slow, one Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Greater Sandplover joined the array of early arrivals. Still plenty of breeding going on with young locals to be found in all corners, the late rains providing excellent conditions for a sucessfull breeding season. For all those contemplating visiting Eilat, whatever you are seeing in the news, I can assure you that you wont regret coming. Life goes on and life goes on peacefully in Eilat.
