WEEKLY ENGLISH UPDATE: Pleased to say its been a quiet week in Eilat if not elsewhere. The week started with a Red-billed Tropicbird seen off the North Beach. While the rest of the week was pretty quiet with small numbers of White-cheeked Terns, Arctic Skuas and White-eyed Gulls, this morning we had a report of a possible Bulwars Petrel!! Well keep an eye out for that in the coming days. Good numbers of waders coming through, mainly Litle Stints, Ruffs, Common Sandpipers, Wood Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers, Redshanks, Greenshanks, Little Ringed Plovers, a few Curlew Sandpipers, some Glossy Ibis....nothing to exciting but good to seethe ponds filling up. Yesterday I went looking for Sooty Falcons again and was just about to throw in the towel when a pair screeched over my head, apparently agitated by a Short-toed Eagle passing by. A Hoopoe Lark was seen earlier in the week at Samar so this morning I went to check out the breeding situation at Yotvata. No sign or sound of Hoopoe Larks, Egyptian Vultures or Arabian Warblers but the place is teeming with Rufous Bush Robins, Namaqua Doves, Arabian Babblers, Blackstarts etc so heres hoping every local has had a good breeding season. Unfortunately the one bird we didnt want to breed seems to have had a bumper season. The Indian House Crow is causing havoc in Eilat, attacking raptors and other birds as well as humans. It is an invasive species we would love to get rid of but in the meantime things are getting worse. A count done last week shows a rapid rise in their numbers...all suggestions for controlling the problem are welcome...Have a good week!
