WHARF RAT RALLY- DIGBY NS- Bikers take care of urselves- we all know God blesses r tarnished angels on earth with Pope Francis himself this spring- even ur harleys..... but be safe- we love u 2 much 2 have anything happen 2 ya.... the rules are cool- actually - everybody cld use them... RCMP ask Wharf Rats to be careful RCMP are asking the Wharf Rats to be careful and have a safe fun rally. Jonathan Riley Published on August 29, 2013 Improperly parked vehicles to be towed Digby RCMP are asking Wharf Rat Rally participants to keep safety in mind. "We want attendees to enjoy themselves and stay safe, says Digby RCMP Constable Darrell McNeil. “As police officers it is our goal to make sure that everyone arrives at their destination and returns home safely.” McNeil expects more than 30,000 motorcycle enthusiasts to attend the Wharf Rat Rally this weekend. He suggests a few simple safety tips to help prevent serious injuries or fatalities. -- Whether walking or riding, be aware of the traffic around you. Ensure other motorists see you and know what you are doing. -- If you plan on walkingto and from events, please wear light colored clothing, stay in well lit areas and refrain from walking in the middle of the road. -- Obey the rules of the road, respect posted speed limits, the rights of pedestrians and other drivers -- Do not drink and drive. Ensure you have a designated driver or take advantage of shuttle services offered during the Rally. --Avoid rider distractions. Know where youre going before you arrive or pull off the road to a safe spot to consult maps or GPS. McNeil also reminds attendees parking their cars or motorcycles to keep valuables out of sight or carry them on their person. The RCMP are also reminding people to respect no parking areas and to avoid blocking private driveways. Starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 until Monday, Sept. 2 at 8 a.m., First Avenue between Carleton Street and Warwick Street will be one big no parking zone. “We will be writing parking tickets and towing any vehicles improperly parked,” said Digby RCMP Constable James Klyszejko. “There has been plenty of notice about this, from the town and from the RCMP. I see the town is out now putting up the no parking signs.” The parking ban on First Avenue is to keep the street clear for fire trucks and any other emergency vehicles. He says the RCMP will be playing it by ear in other traffic problem areas. “We have extra traffic officers coming down for this and if we notice a problem with congestion, we may have to set up our own traffic direction,” said Klyszejko. “Above all people need to be patient, watch their speed and watch out for the bikers because there are going to be few more than normal around.” This will be Klyszejko’s third Wharf Rat, although his first as a member of the local detachment. He has come up from Yarmouth to work foot patrols for the last two rallies. “Generally the rally is pretty quiet,” he said. “We don’t generally have much serious trouble. We have noise complaints and burn out complaints. “We have officers out now doing those foot patrols, letting people know we are around, if they have any questions, if we can help with anything, they can approach us. “And if something does happen, we’ll be right there and we can respond that much faster.” [email protected] digbycourier.ca/News/2013-08-29/article-3369083/RCMP-ask-Wharf-Rats-to-be-careful/1
