WHAT IS SOLAR WIND? A constant stream of charged particles, - TopicsExpress

WHAT IS SOLAR WIND? A constant stream of charged particles, mainly electrons, protons and the nuclei of helium atoms, is ejected from the hot corona of the Sun into space at a speed of several hundred kilometres per second . This solar wind causes our star to lose about 1 million tonnes of matter per second. The solar wind is of particular interest to scientists because by examining it they hope to determine the chemical composition of the original nebula from which the slar system was formed. In 2004, the Genisis mission was due to bring back to Earth particles captured from the solar wind. However, the project received a setback when the capsule containing the science experiments was badly damaged due to its parachute falling to open during its return to Earth.
