WHETHER youre one of those people who love the cyclone season - TopicsExpress

WHETHER youre one of those people who love the cyclone season because you get to cosy up with your blankets and hot beverages, or one of those who absolutely resent it, it is necessary to get all your preparations out of the way early. And small things such as candles, batteries for torches, shutters and canned food are some of the essentials you should be buying bit by bit as the season develops. Director of Meteorological Services Fiji Alipate Waqaicelua says Fiji is at risk of being hit by a more severe spate of tropical cyclones this season. There is an increased risk of severe TCs affecting the region this season compared to last, with very high risk for Tonga, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna and New Caledonia, Mr Waqaicelua said in a warning statement issued by the MET Office last month. Because of this, it is critical that all communities remain alert and prepared throughout the 2013/14 TC season. According to the cyclone emergency website in Queensland, which has the same TC season as Fiji (November — April), preparation is the most important step for families to take. Tune in to your local radio and TV stations, the website suggested as one of the most crucial steps — particularly for families living in rural areas, who are being encouraged to use whatever news source they have access to. Other things include buying food, storing water and trimming trees around the yard. Check the condition of your roof and repair any loose tiles, leaves or roof screws, ensure windows are fitted with shutters or metal screens and trim any branches overhanging your house. The creation of an emergency kit is also of high importance and some of the things it should include are a portable radio, a torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable food, candles, matches and medications. For Fiji, one to two cyclones could be expected this season, of which one may reach or exceed category three status, Mr Waqaicelua revealed. So putting time and effort in preparing for the worst will be worth the effort as the cyclone weather worsens. fijitimes/story.aspx?id=251650
