WHY I NEVER LIKE GAMBLING WHEN I GREW UP? The reason is simple. The odds are not in my favor. Imagine I am dealt three cards and what are my odds of winning. The odds are simply not in my favor and are wholly dependent on luck or fate. When I was a young boy and during lunar new year I used to gamble with my neighbours who were around my age. I always won by using a simple strategy. I would not want to be a dealer but just a player. I started off by betting 5 cents. If I lost, my next bet would be 10 cents. Again if I lost, the next bet would be 20 cents. The odds are in my favor to win at least once. And when I won, I took back all my money plus a gain. Over time, I made some money gambling using this strategy. I dont think one can use this strategy in casino. There is one game where one can play to win and that is Poker. Bill Gates was very good in Poker and according to some books on him, he often won in the game of Poker. I suppose he won money playing Poker during college days. Another person who was good in the card game of Bridge is Warren Buffett. He spent a lot of his younger days playing Bridge. Books written about him described him as a good player. He once said that he did not mind being locked up in prison playing Bridge with 3 others. Few years back, he played online Bridge with his friends. I wonder whether he still play Bridge nowadays. The late paramount leader of China, Deng XiaoPing , who was born in the year of the Dragon, loved to play Bridge. His knowledge of Bridge might have something to do with him making the decision to open up China to the world. Mao Zedong, who was born in the year of the Snake, united China but did not bring wealth to the country. It was Deng XiaoPing who brought wealth to the country. Is there a link between a good bridge player, a good poker player and wealth? Quite simply yes and no. I am sure there are consistent losers in these card games. Michael Loke
