WORDS OF WISDOM WEDNESDAY - SPEAKING LIFE TO WOMEN & GIRLS! Please support THE CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN (CEDAW). I attended a reception and discussion last night at the UN Foundation location in Washington, DC. It was very well attended and local support from the Wilson building included: Kim Bassett, Director of the Office on Womens Policy & Initiatives (on behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser), At-Large Councilmembers David Grosso and Anita Bonds. CEDAW is a UN-adopted international treaty that affirms principles of fundamental human rights and equality for women around the world. Often referred to as the international bill of rights for women, it is the most comprehensive international agreement on eliminating discrimination against women and girls in every sphere. Today, the United States is one of only seven countries in the world that has not ratified CEDAW. CITIES FOR CEDAW is a national, grassroots effort to encourage city officials and leaders around the US to adopt ordinances and resolutions that recognize the principles of CEDAW at the local level. The CITIES FOR CEDAW campaign aims to generate national support for US ratification of CEDAW as well as pave the way for progress on women and girls issues in communities around the country.
