WORKOUT TIP: There seems to be a general misconception among some people that shorter rest periods between sets are better because they produce a more intense workout. While this does make a workout more difficult cardiovascularly and cause you to burn more calories, it should be remembered that cardio fitness and calorie burning isnt the primary goal of resistance training. Thats cardios job. We lift heavy because our main aim is to develop muscle. And exercising while our muscles are fatigued and still affected by lactic acid, and while were still out of breath, prevents us from doing as effectively as possible. Its important to rest long enough between sets to gain most of your strength back, so that when you reach failure or near-failure in the next set, it means something and you get the most from the set. Exactly how long you should rest depends on you and the type of exercise youre doing, and its best judged by the way you feel. It can be a minute or even up to several minutes for maximum strength and power workouts if necessary. - Fabian.
