Walking the malecon on a rare dreary day I happened upon a performance of Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers), also known as Palo Volador (Pole Flying), a traditional ritual/ceremony that involves five performers who climb a thirty meter pole. Four of the five, tied with ropes, then launch themselves to descend to the ground, while the fifth remains on top of the pole, dancing and playing a flute and drum.
