Want to prevent your dog from begging at the dinner table? Follow these tips: - Exercise your dog prior to meal time. A tired dog is a good dog and an exercised dog is a more relaxed dog too! - Consider aligning your dog’s meal schedule with your meal schedule. Of course Fido will scarf his dinner in no time flat so extend the amount of time he spends eating by ditching the food bowl. Feed his kibble in a food dispensing toy. My dog Chompers personally endorses the Kyjen star spinner treat toy, Nina Ottoson treat maze and Smarter Toys IQ ball. There’s also every dog’s favorite puppy pacifier the classic Kong for stuffing canned dog food and other soft food including peanut butter. - Crate train your dog so you can prevent undesirable jumping and begging until your dog is well-trained. Give him a stuffed Kong, chew or special toy to hold his attention. - Teach your dog to lie down on a mat or bed and stay. First, practice this when it’s not meal time so your dog can focus on the task. Once he seems to be doing well, try to practice in the right context. Have your dog stay on his bed while you sit at the kitchen or dining room table (or the couch, as the case may be) when food isn’t present. If your dog can’t stay when it’s not meal time, it’s not likely he’s ready to stay while you are eating. - Ignore the inappropriate behavior when possible and never reinforce any behavior that you don’t want to see repeated. If you reward your dog for barking, jumping and staring at you, he will likely repeat the behavior hoping that it will pay off again.
