Watch: Civil servants in Liverpool go on strike in a row with management over closing their Garston office Video loading Civil servants in Liverpool have walked out this morning in a row with management over plans to axe their office. The Department of Work and Pensioners (DWP) is intending to close its Garston call centre and relocate staff. But workers, many of whom have been moved in previous office closures, are unhappy. And almost all of them based at the Cressington House branch in Garston are striking today in protest. The office in Garston handles calls for benefit inquiries relating to job seekers allowance and employment support. The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) is representing staff and say out of 140 staff, 132 have not gone into work this morning. They say cost-cutting is behind the closure and urged management to consider alternatives such as setting up a satellite centre in south Liverpool. VIEW GALLERY Dave Owens, Liverpool branch representative for the PCS, said: “Management decided earlier in the year that they were going to close Cressington House in Garston. “The original intention was to transfer all staff to child maintenance in Birkenhead or the call centre in Bootle.
