Watching Claire Byrne Live tonight was quite interesting. I might not have gotten a chance to see me boos Gary Shaw or Michael Casper Hilton talking but it was deffo worth the watch. :) Firstly, I was very impressed with Claires professional but engaging presenting style and line of questioning. She had such poise but was not unwilling to challenge bullshit if it presented itself, which it quite frequently did. I mean, the opposition (anti-equality gay guy (?) and Breda OBrien) arguments got weaker and more contradictory as the debate went on that they were kind of their own worst enemy. They kept focusing in on The Family as if theres some strict definition for what a modern family unit should look like and that marriage equality was somehow destroying that made up definition in the same manner that condoms destroyed the institution of pregnancy. See my point? :S The audience was quite mixed despite slightly more airtime given to opinions that opposed marriage equality. A lot of these people are still under the impression that marriage is a Christian creation that has only existed since Christianity was born which is just pure ignorance. Marriage is a pagan creation that has existed in almost all cultures, creeds and societies. To claim marriage as a religious institution is just ridiculous, it belongs to everyone and no one at the same time. No one is required to get married but if one wished to do so, organised religions and their associated organisations should have no opinions on whether they do so or not, unless one wished to get married in a church. And ones ability to parent a child should be judged, not their biological claim to any child. There are more then enough incapable parents out there who are biological parents and whos children would be much better off in the protection of others... Basically, the whole debate showed that intolerance and ignorance is still very alive in this country and those who are on the right side of history would do well to come out in May to vote for marriage equality and make these people finally (hopefully) see the error of their ways in full light. And to the people who have publicly voiced their pleas for equality, thank you for fighting for a better future for everyone. Peace.
