Water restriction changes in McKinney start Nov. 3 Once every two weeks watering allowed on scheduled trash days Water restrictions in McKinney will change for the winter. Starting the week of Nov. 3, watering with sprinklers and irrigation systems will be allowed once every other week on the regularly scheduled residential trash day. Restrictions apply to all homes, businesses and common areas located within McKinney. Commercial addresses and common areas should water on the residential trash day for the zone in which they are located. Irrigation systems equipped with smart controllers, like ET controllers, are not exempt from the watering schedule. Watering with a hand-held hose that uses an automatic shut-off nozzle, a soaker hose or drip irrigation system is allowed up to two hours daily. The daytime restriction of no watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. only applies between April 1 and Oct. 31. To view all water policies, visit mckinneytexas.org/waterrestrictions. The temporary seasonal change is based on recommendations from the city’s water supplier, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). Limitations on irrigation systems used to water landscapes are due largely to below average rainfall and the continued decline of water levels in reservoirs. In winter months, officials advise lawns are typically dormant and recommend systems be turned off and used only if necessary on the specified watering day. Violating the Stage 3 water restrictions could result in significant penalties including fees. To report a water violation, call the water restriction hotline at 972-439-1059 or visit mckinneytexas.org/waterrestrictions.
