We all recognize the need for tree trimming to protect electrical - TopicsExpress

We all recognize the need for tree trimming to protect electrical infrastructure. Both the Community Review Team report and Michigan Public Service Commission report state clearly that inadequate trimming contributed significantly to Decembers power outage. At the same time, East Lansing residents have legitimate and heartfelt concerns about the impact that overzealous trimming will have on the character of their neighborhoods. Today I asked BWL General Manager Peter Lark and BWL Board Chair David Price to pause trimming in East Lansing temporarily while a compromise is investigated. I am not a utility manager, nor am I an arborist or a forester. I dont know precisely what can be done to balance the needs of the BWL with the needs of East Lansing residents. What I do know is, if trimming recommences immediately, we will lose the opportunity to develop a compromise that works for all parties concerned. Once the trees are cut, they cannot be uncut. It is my sincere hope that BWL will grant East Lansings request to pause trimming and come to the table to discuss a balanced approach to tree trimming in our community.
