We are sad to report the following news about our leader, Colum McCann, but we are stronger because of him and wish him a speedy recovery. newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/collum_mccann_attacked/ A poem for Colum: The Story Goes On For Colum, whose vision and voice Rouse and conduct these words, Words that, like the great world itself, Spin through us, become a song Of gratitude, of hope, of empathy, So radical and alive, it hums Within our bones, honeys our hearts, Braids a oneness into our souls, Makes us all more whole. The story goes on. Once again, the world doesn’t end with us. The world exists because of us, it spins as if to find our faces— and smiles… It’s far bigger than just our story. We will continue to strive… take ourselves to another place. The world doesn’t end with us because we aren’t a disgrace. So now let’s continue the journey and live life. And we will come to life. We need to use our experience and knowledge to cause change and pass the message. For we are the ones that we have been waiting for— we cannot wait for others now. The others are waiting. Speak, and they shall come. The story goes on. Once again, the world doesn’t end with us. Although we sleep on different grass, we’ll see the same stars. Like the sun doesn’t stop burning when it crosses the horizon, like how matches only smell after being blown out, how dreams feel clearest once the day’s begun, how you only smell your boyfriend on his sweater once he’s left—we will rise tomorrow, stronger than ever, and we may not be the bodies you expect, but we will be in the bodies you need—to learn, to live, to love. The world doesn’t end with us. It ends with a story. And the strength of our lives. Please remember, there is no ending, only new, old, sad beginnings. Once again, a new generation of authors write the circular stage of existence. The story goes on. Or does it? What if it’s all up to us? Let’s live life as it is. Too many sips, too many doughnuts, too many parties. No stopping the disco train. No exit for Travolta. Colum’s conducting. Chugga chugga chugga. Onward down the track. Going to places, instead we are going to. Once again, the world doesn’t end with us. Hope only needs one person, one story, one breath. It can be silenced the same way. Don’t let it slip away. The beauty, the wonder, and the joy. This comforts me. Life starts when death comes. A 93-year-old man dies in his sleep, while a 23-year-old couple get their firstborn. So is death really a tragic act? We are just a small particle of dust in this humongous universe. Whatever you do, it does affect—even though you are just a small particle of air. But it does begin with us. We make it spin. At Yale we ramped it up. It won’t slow down for a while. Here we have proved that we are not alone, but we are by no means small either… But in us each, a world, a galaxy, a universe, spinning, shifting, growing, exploding, birthing new light, new thoughts, new stories. Go on and cry, but remember this isn’t goodbye. The story goes on. Whether it’s tomorrow or in a hundred years, we will meet again. And it won’t be like we just met. It will be like we haven’t seen each other in a while. The story goes on. The story goes on. Once again, the world doesn’t end with us. Or does it? The story only begins now. It begins with our story—our stories. Gandhi said, Be the change you want to see in the world. This weekend, at the N4 Summit, we are being that. And now we will take that out into the world with us. Live a life of learning and contribute positively in the evolution of human consciousness. Staying humble makes the world go around. Cuz a closed mind can’t be fed. Our story goes on as we break the walls that trapped us away from our reality. It leaves us just for a moment, and like a small bird, it darts back and forth, until the story finds a new home. Everything you mind, it’s in your heart, it’s your whole entire life. We will see each other again. The day may be ending, and we all will be returning home, but the friendship goes on, once again for a lifetime. The story goes on. Once again, the world doesn’t end with us. No, it doesn’t end with us. It begins in our hearts, moves within us…it begins with us. We grow and evolve and leave a mark on the world, a legacy that becomes the foundation for the stones that will come after us. With us, narrative is infinite. Tales are timeless, and our lives are limitless. Composed by Narrative 4 Summit Participants July 1, 2014
