More about the program: Any size of gift is most welcome, and when you give $200 you are matched as a Padrino (sponsor) to a specific student. The Program is very important to the indigenous community as education is a significant force for moving a family out of poverty. The students are hand selected from the poorest families of the villages, often from single parent families. To be eligible for a scholarship, the students are required to have and maintain good grades which we check twice a year. While education is free in Ecuador, there are no high schools in the villages and the family has to pay for transportation of the child to the high schools in Cotacachi, uniforms and school supplies. This is the story of one of the students selected for the program: Luis is from a single mother home, the eldest of four children. The mom makes $131 dollars a month doing handicrafts and subsistence farming which she stretches to cover basic essentials of food, clothing and shelter for the family. The extra costs of transportation, uniforms and school supplies are out of her reach without the scholarship from the Program. In three years, when Luis has graduated with a high school diploma, he will be able to get a job and perhaps even go to university. At a minimum he will triple the income in the family and help send his sisters to school. This is the difference a donor makes in the life of a child and the circumstances of a whole family.
