We had a great afternoon after being shut-in by rain since Friday night. We took a ride down Highway 82 out of Erwin to the Averasboro Battlefield and then on down Highway 82 which I did not realize was designated a North Carolina Scenic Byway. There were beautiful fields and woodlands as well as historic homes. We went into Godwin and passed where Carbine Williams lived who invented the Carbine rifle and then into Wade and went to the Old Bluff Presbyterian Church, one of the 3 original Presbyterian Churches founded in the Cape Fear Region along with Barbecue and Longstreet in 1758. Some of my Bain ancestors were buried there, but no markers exist. In my almost 68 years, today was the first time I have ever been to Old Bluff. The grounds are beautiful and the cemetery is huge. Can you imagine the lives and the stories of those people who rest there today...some for almost 250 years! It is still an active cemetery today. The Old Bluff Church is used for a few special services only and this building was built in 1855. A ride through history this close to home us well worth a Sunday afternoon excursion. To those who maintain the Old Bluff property, you do an excellent job. I am attaching a few photos of the Old Bluff grounds.
