We have a policy at the store to highly promote the incredible talents of the folks who live in east vancouver, but we will be making an exception soon. I have a friend, Milinda Houlette, from Arkansas and she is of Cherokee/Chocktaw descent... She was trying to send us some Plains beadwork which she makes to have here for Mothers Day, but the US mail decided to drop the package in the rain during the recent hurricanes in Arkansas... so, she is re-sending it via courier, but it might not be here by Mothers Day... it will however be here for World Indigenous Day and as a special gift to me, she is beading ME a Star of David in the Cherokee tradition... what an honour... There are two other gifts she is sending me... 1. a pair of beaded shoes, and 2. a beaded yoke, White Mountain Apache, that was made for a girl to have an early womanhood ceremony. She died while she was sewing the pieces together. She asked that we auction them off and give the funds so some of her sisters here in Vancouver who have suffered directly for a missing loved one... NOT an organisation, an individual...I will be looking for suggestions. When these treasures from the Plains arrive to me, I will post photos... Milinda is a TRUE sister, and does not judge others by their ethnicity, but by their heart...Milinda is a social worker, working with the people of her nation!
