We have a review of of Man of Steel. Do you agree with this or do you have a different opinion/ o, the first of the summer blockbusters is upon us, and with another re booted franchise, Superman has finally put his underpants on correctly in Zack Snyder vision of the comic book hero in Man of Steel. Produced by Christopher Nolan of the Batman trilogy, Man of Steel seems to have slightly darker undertones compared to the other outings which works well on screen and portrays the characters in different light. It’s good to see another British actor playing and American comic book superhero, after Christian Bale playing Batman and Andrew Garfield in the Amazing Spiderman we now have Henry Cavill as Kal-El the kid from Krypton. Different from the original Superman, this film gets straight into the plot instead of having the long backstory of how Clarke Kent was raised on a farm in Smallville. Instead of the long narration that Marlon Brando did superbly in the original as Jor-El, (now played by Russell Crowe), this time we see his childhood told in flashbacks, which makes it easier to digest, rather than becoming at times monotonous and keeps the pace of the film, and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent possibly steals the film with his performance. With Amy Adams cast as Lois Lane there can be a lack of on screen chemistry between her and Henry Cavill, but I think she is more realistic than Margot Kidder was. With Michael Shannon playing Superman’s nemesis General Zod with a performance that would make Terrance Stamp Kneel before him with a frighteningly dark screen presence. When all the action begins, the special effects and CGI are better than anything I have seen yet, and the last 30 minutes are a spectacle of action sequences that are unrivalled by anything I can think of to date . If you like superhero films you will love this one. Just because its produced by Nolan don’t expect another Dark Knight, as this is different in every respect, and very rightly so, Superman is basically an alien, and not a caped crusader who scours the streets looking for bad guys, but a drifter, with special powers who goes from town to town doing different jobs, trying to keep his head down out of fear of rejection, should the human race realize his secret. I watched Man of Steel in 3D, and Zack Snyder’s use of an anamorphic lens works well, with less screen flare than J.J Abrahams used in the last Star Trek film (which was awesome), but I would also consider watching it again in 2D, not just because I want to see it again, but to compare the two different aspects of the CGI and fantastic special effects. This is my own personal opinion of the film, and some critics have not been as kind as I have, but I think Man of Steel is possibly the best film of the year so far just beating Star Trek into Darkness and Ironman 3 to the top spot.
