We have explored a yoga observance called tapas in class this week. That term translates from sanskrit to mean fiery effort as it relates to discipline. We began with kapalabhati breath, a pranayama technique to stoke the internal fire in the belly. Then we used the abdominal muscles we located in pranayama practice throughout several poses. The intention was to stay disciplined throughout class, mindful of each breath and each pose. We learned that as we brought attention to the breath and body sensations we were able to discipline ourselves to focus on living each moment. As we brought awareness to the postures we found discipline to work the muscles that support the pose and balance the work to with the discipline to soften and find peace in even challenging balance poses. We found discipline to stay longer in a pose and to take longer to get into a pose without distraction. Practice taught the discipline to stay present and to balance effort with ease.
