We have gone around in circles with Vanderbilt about the hospital bills from the accident. Barry was seen in the ER, charged $18K and discharged. I was admitted to the trauma unit for four days, billed $45K. (I have now stayed in a $10K/night room. Food was lousy.) Due to a computer flub at our insurance, the initial bills were denied. When we asked, repeatedly, to get VUMC to refile them, customer service personnel were highhanded and unreasonable, telling us it was our responsibility to pay the bill. A few times, they said theyd refile but didnt. Our health insurance CANNOT reprocess a denied claim and a VUMC had to initiate a new claim to get paid. Finally, they decided to charge our auto insurance, then DENIED that better reimbursement was their motivator. (Please. Im not stupid.) Our auto insurance said, HM. This is a lot of money. What was the group health share? When VUMC told them that was the whole thing, auto ins said, If you want to get paid at all, you file group health first and well pick up deductibles and copays. Computer confirmed that they did so. YESSSSS
