We have just delivered this matching pair of dining benches to a customer in London. Whilst remodelling her flat she had searched in vain for benches which were long enough to sit alongside her dining table but had the right look. Our brief was to create something with a retro industrial look so we used pitch pine timber reclaimed from the interior doors of a 1930’s house. To complete the retro styling the legs are raw steel hairpins which are modelled on a classic mid-century design. Traditional joinery techniques were employed throughout including bread board ends which ensure the bench tops remain flat. Three coats of Tung oil finish the piece. This oil enhances the beautiful grain pattern and protects the wood without the use of harmful petrochemicals. Why do we love reclaimed wood? Because it is of a quality, strength and beauty which is virtually impossible to find today. After being harvested over 80 years ago this wood is certainly well seasoned giving it great stability. We also hate waste – by using reclaimed timber to produce long lasting quality furniture we reduce landfill and our customer gets a piece that will last forever. Our battle to defeat the scourge of cheap, badly made flat pack furniture continues! After my daughter gave the benches a final strength test our customer told us she was delighted with them and she has asked us to create a coffee table design also using reclaimed materials. We are now busy working on some ideas for that project. Ps. we still have enough of the reclaimed timber left over for another bench set. If you would like something similar for your home please get in touch.
