We have spent the last couple of days working with a terrific bunch of people mining sand north of Brisbane, whey work for Southern Pacific Sands this company is taking the welfare of its biggest asset, their workers, very seriously. As the Manager of the mine Mick stated, keeping his people safe is much more important than selling an extra truck load of sand. As mentioned before we hypothetically injure a couple of workers as part of our presentation to give them an idea of working with one arm or no sight also having another worker acting as supervisor having to give verbal instruction which is not always easy. Mick suggested we take this a step further & we set up an obstacle course with chairs, we then conducted time trials of a person blind folded being instructed by a work mate to complete a figure of eight course walking around the chairs. It was very interesting watching the struggle of not only the blinded person but also the instructor – one young lady had to ask someone to write “right & left” on her hands…
