We have two areas of low pressure, that will result in a fairly significant coastal storm that will develop and slide up the East Coast. The storm will have a major impact on much of the Northeast, heavy rain along the coast , with heavy accumulating snow inland, some of it sizable. We have high pressure in Canada which will keep the storm from moving too quickly, the storm is going to be cut off from the main flow, which will allow it to hang around for a few days, leading to a prolonged storm event. Once the storm stalls near Long Island or into southern New England, it could even retrograde west a bit. It looks likely that the coastal storm will produce rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches from DC to New York City, along the I-95 corridor and New Jersey starting later tonight. There could be a mix to start things off along the I-95 before changing over to rain. There is also a good likelihood of a change back to a little snow/mix on the backside, as colder air wraps in behind the coastal. Winds will be gusty, with wind gust of 50-60 mph quite possible along the New Jersey coast, Long Island, along the Coast of southern New England, and Cape Ann, Cape Cod and offshore islands. There will be coastal flooding concerns. For western MA a wintry mix to start than changing to heavy rain. Valley locations around Springfield a D-2 inches of snow/ice, places like the Worcester Hills could see a D- 2 inches of snow/mix before changing to rain Tuesday afternoon., with 2-4 inches in the hills, northwest MA would see more than 4 inches before the changeover. Most of CT will see rain, but for the highest elevations in CT there could be a little accumulation . Rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches across Southern New England. Northeast Pennsylvania, up through the eastern Half of New York State, into interior western and northern New England, look to see 8-12+ inches, along with sleet mixing in at times. Places like the Poconos, Adirondacks, western Catskills and the Greens and higher elevations across New Hampshire and across northern Maine could easily get over a foot, over the next couple of days. Across New York State things will start out as a mix then transition to heavy snow late afternoon into Tuesday night. For places like the Finger Lakes and western NYS 2-6 inches with a few higher amounts possible. for the Tug Hill western Mohawk Valley 6-12 inches are possible, with higher amounts possible across the Adirondacks and Catskills, the Hill towns south of the Mohawk Valley and the eastern Mohawk Valley 8-12+, for the Capital District ( valley 2-5 with higher terrain 6-10) ....there would be sleet mixing in at times across these areas..... Pennsylvania things will start out as mix for places like Allentown the mix will transition over to rain then transition back over to some accumulating snow by Tuesday night . amounts over northeast Pennsylvania would be 8-12+ inches .western Pennsylvania 1-4 inches, central Pennsylvania (State College) 2-5 inches, with amounts building as you head into northeast PA, .southwest Pennsylvania will see a snow/sleet mix but mostly rain. The storm will cause travel problems and I do expect at least some power outages. Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey will see a mix but mostly rain. The storm will start to slowly pull away on Thursday, with precipitation lingering into part of Friday. I will post some maps this evening.
