We live in an 1803 home and have had and continue to have unexplained sightings and paranormal activities. After many requests to do so we decided to share our home with those who are curious about such things. I have attached two images for members to examine - one taken by a professional photographer at a wedding that we had there and the other taken by someone touring our house last fall during last years event. Examine the posted image taken at a wedding in front of the house a couple years back. The ghostly face in the window to the left of the door and the upper torso of a woman in a white dress on the very right of the image just above the person seated on the porch are yet to be explained. The second image was taken in my daughters room in a corner and appears similar to the fictional Gremlins in the movie of that same name years back. The eerie blue eyes seem to freak out many people. Yes we do own a cat but our cat is white and was locked in a crate in an outbuilding at the time this image was taken. We welcome all comments and hope you will consider joining us on one of these two weekends. Taking reservations for Sutherlands Tavern Ghost & Spirit Tours Listen! There it goes again! Those footsteps that walk with haste pacing up and down the front staircase only heard as a thunderstorm approaches. Who is the old woman in a 19th-century white dress in the upstairs window seen by many as they pass this Dinwiddie landmark when no one is at home? Who or what is the figure dressed in all black thats face appears as a swirling black mist? You may get a chance to find out for yourself October 24-26th and Oct 31-Nov 2nd what or who haunts Sutherlands Tavern. Darrell, Michelle, and Emma Olgers will open their circa 1803 home and give candlelight tours of this historic tavern that has had many souls pass into the great beyond within its walls over its years as an inn, tavern, post office, and Civil War hospital. The Olgers family will recant their personal experiences and haunting tales of others at this home throughout the years. They will show guests the bloodstained floors where soldiers’ blood spilled during the Civil War. And they’ll walk guests through the 211-year-old hallway where footsteps are often heard and where one paranormal investigator has said an “evil or unsettled” presence lives. On display will be an eerie image taken by paranormal investigators of a presence in the home that remains unexplained. Visitors are encouraged to take pictures as several images last year taken by people on the tour contained unexplained phenomenon. Darrell Olgers said, “This is the fourth year weve opened our home for this event, and last year each time slot was booked to capacity. “ As a result, he explained, they have extended the event to two weekends this year and added Sunday nights to the tour. “Year before last we had some excitement during one of our tours when a gentleman inquired about a painting of a young woman hanging in the parlor, stating he had seen this very woman on several occasions in the upstairs window as he passed by the house and asked if she would be giving tours tonight. After we informed him that the woman had died probably in the 1870’s, a look of terror spread over his face, and he asked to leave the tour.” This year’s tour will also include the Sutherland family graveyard behind the house and the old cooking kitchen where many of the 16 slaves that were accounted for at Sutherland’s Tavern in 1834 would have lived and worked. Master story teller Jimmy Olgers will be recounting ghost stories associated with Dinwiddie County by the firelight in this kitchen. Tours will be given every half hour from 6 – 9:30 p.m with tours being given every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour each night and are by appointment only. The suggested donation is $7 per person and all funds collected will go toward the continued restoration and preservation of this historic structure for future generations to enjoy. We are also collecting non-perishable food items for the group CHANCE whos focus is helping abused and neglected children. Tours are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment please message me with your preferred date and time. Tours fill up extremely fast so please do not delay. We urge caution in bringing children who are easily frightened. The is not a haunted fun house where actors in costumes try to scare you - what you experience on this tour is real. Sutherlands Tavern is located in Dinwiddie County, VA at 19621 Namozine Road at the intersection of Rt. 460 in Sutherland, just 15 minutes from downtown Petersburg, 30 minutes east of Blackstone and 35 minutes from downtown Richmond.
