We need to re-conceptualize First Nations education starting with clearly defined First nations education standards inclusive of curriculum content teacher excellence and culturally appropriate assessment. It is imperative that we understand and ensure First Nations students realize their individual gifts and purpose. Education must be a healing process where pedagogy is founded within holistic development language and culture. In creating a new vision for First Nations education we need to connect cultural theory to contemporary educational initiatives, this includes innovative approaches to developing curriculum content and teacher education. Assessment must clearly indicate students are achieving standards based on our definition of First Nations student success. Education needs to lead social and economic community development and self-sufficiency. By understanding their personal gifts our students can fulfill their purpose and reciprocal responsibility, as leaders, protectors, healers, providers or teachers to their families, friends, communities, Nations within the rest of creation.
